This well established and remotely located hotel has a very distinctive alpine chalet feel to it.
The Belmar is a super hotel that cooks delicious meals with the ingredients from the onsite organic greenhouse and for a connoisseur of ale you may want to try one of their homebrewed umbers whilst sitting on the bar balcony that overlooks the canopy down towards the Nicoya Peninsula.
The hotel is composed from two big chalets, which all have fantastic views from the rooms and of its 9 acre grounds. There are a number of different category rooms ranging from standard wood decorated options in the main buildings with good views to the higher category rooms located in the annex which have floor to roof panoramic windows and private Jacuzzis and verandas.
The lodge has been committed to the environment since it opened 30 years ago, and is probably the best hotel to base yourself whilst exploring the region. It's main perk is the amazing views it offers, which on a clear day can sometimes even extend to spotting glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean. It's set back is that it does not have a swimming pool.
With a maximum of 6 people per hike, with the bi-lingual private guides the hotel offers hiking is made informative and enjoyable for all. Other activities include the Finca Modelo Canyoning Tour, a trek to the highest point in Monteverde following the Cerro Amigos trail, a visit to Monteverde Butterfly Gardens, a 45 mintue tour of the Bat Jungle and the Monteverde Orchard Garden Tour. Culteral activities include a visit to CASEM (The Cooperative of Artisans, Santa Elena - Monteverde) which provides it customers with handmade goods (jewelry, bags, clothes and crafts) all in the name of an organisation which has been crucial to female empowerment in the community.
